Adding icons

Probably covered somewhere, but I haven't found it: What's the process for adding new icons? I tried the following: I took a screenshot of the whole screen, brought the screenshot up in mspaint, carefully cropped to just the icon, and tried to upload it. At that point I got a little lost I think, because I didn't know how to get the icon on the Category page for that icon type. I ended up manually editing the category page and adding a link by hand. Since I thought those pages were automatically generated that seemed wrong, but it worked ok AFAICT. Then after all that, I noiced my new icon had a brown frame around it that none of the others did. Sigh. Here's the one I added: http://eq2.wikia.com/wiki/File:Forearms_Icon_48_%28Treasured%29.png -- Baconlettuceandtomato ( talk ) 03:03, May 13, 2013 (UTC)

You did just fine. Here's the thing about icons - most of them were uploaded before SOE changed the default user interface from completely square icons to rounded corner icons. The rest were uploaded by someone (probably me) who was using the ProfitUI interface, which still has square icons. There's nothing wrong with rounded corner icons and they display fine on the site. as a hint you can link Images if you write [[:File:Forearms Icon 48 (Treasured).png]] that creates this File:Forearms Icon 48 (Treasured).png so you don't have to write the whole html link.
The trick is the leading : in the link in that way you can link to categories too =) -- ChillispikeSig ( Talk ) 06:12, May 13, 2013 (UTC)
As you've noted, the categories are manual, since an icon is generic (even if it looks like a particular armor slot) and SOE has often used them for multiple types, particularly when it comes to ears/wrists/rings. Eventually we're going to replace the manual icons entirely when we start auto-creating equipment articles from SOE's data feed, but for the short term you basically have it all correct. The only thing to watch out for is try to keep the icons 42x42 px. The one linked above is 43 high, it has that 1 pixel row of black at the bottom that makes it technically non-standard.
Also, like McJeff said, the frames are determined by the UI you use, some are round like default now but many custom UIs still use square frames of various colors. It's a concession to practicality, basically -- if we required people to upload them in the default UI appearance we'd have to go through and remove loads of them or recreate them. -- lordebon ( talk ) 22:07, May 13, 2013 (UTC)
I totally forgot to check that icon's size, that I got one dimension at 42 was as much luck as anything. I really was hoping for a better process for uploading the icons. Capturing icons, even if I did it a few more times, is still going to take me at least twice as long as it takes me to add an entire new page for an item. So, spending time fixing quest rewards seems more useful.
