This is a topic that I haven't seen discussed anywhere on the forum yet - if it has been discussed somewhere, then forgive me.
Supporting EQ2X on EQ2i
Edit
In looking at the new EQ2X Official Forum , it's evident that there are a lot of new and returning players on the new EQ2X server. Many of them quit EQ2 due to financial reasons rather than by choice. Many others have never played EQ2 before, or quit immediately after its turbulent release. The server and forum are both hopping with newbie questions, and a lot of people are being referred to EQ2i for answers.
Unfortunately, we have nothing on EQ2i about EQ2X at the moment - not even a description of the service, and certainly not any explanation of the differences, or how the wiki's information might only apply to Live or Gold/Plat subscribers.
I had a little time on my hands, so I posted a few things related to EQ2X. The first was an EQ2X page itself, explaining the service and containing links. I also updated the Installation page to explicitly explain EQ2X and to point new players to it, since you can no longer get a free trial of EQ2 Live unless a friend recruits you (I checked).
I also created a new template to help us quickly point out any unique limitations of EQ2X in our articles. The template is simply
{{EQ2X|Type a helpful hint here}}
. In the resulting hint box, the EQ2X logo is a link back to the EQ2X article. It looks like this:
For EQ2X Players Only:
If you're truly free-to-play, as in a Bronze membership, then your game is much more limited than the rest of us are accustomed to. Time to buy some Station Cash! |
I know each of us probably has a different opinion on whether EQ2X is a good thing or not, but the fact is that it's going to be a big part of EQ2 going forward. The sheer numbers of people on the free server this week are proof of that, and the end of the 14-day Live trial forces the issue. Our wiki needs to embrace EQ2X, like it or not.
So, I've implemented the bare-minimum of what I figured we needed to do to welcome these masses of new EQ2X readers at our wiki (i.e. the above edits plus a news posting). But there are probably more or better ways that we can and should update the wiki for EQ2X. I guess I'm just hoping to start a discussion about this here, and see if we can figure out what's needed going forward. -- Sassinak 21:45, August 27, 2010 (UTC)
