Icons are driving me nuts

There is a level of duplication in the Category:Spell Icons that is very hard to bear. Trying to find the duplicates in the mass that is the current category would be doable but very overwhelming.

I would very much like to:

  1. add a background color category to each icon
  2. search for duplicates inside the color
  3. find the best of any repeated icon
    • relink (if needed - some if not many duplicated icons have no linkto's)
  4. AfD the unused dupes

While I hope that the color cats can stay when I am done, I do not expect it and will remove them by hand when finished with it all (I do not know how to run a bot or even if it is allowed).

I do not wish to start this project without some kind of blessing from an Admin. I will be eating up a few K of storage on what could be termed "useless" categorizations [WAG is 21K for the text additions (600 x 35 bytes)]; it can possibly confuse new contributors (although I do not see how); and it could take a month to complete.

Please consider yourself blessed. We use the icons quite frequently and while they may be changed on occasion by soe, they're much less likely to change than other portions of the interface (like examine windows and stats on equipment). Eliminating the duplication is a noble and worthy effort. Thankyou for taking this on.-- Kodia 13:49, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

I left the Category:Icons by Color extant (I have discovered I love it), but otherwise finished this To Do list. I have already made a start on replacing off-center/blurred/faded icons. I just wanted to ask if anything should be changed, or if I can carry on as I have been? J a n z e- N e k Coms Cons 20:39, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

I think so far we're all just keeping our fingers away from the keyboard in fear that they'll get lopped off in the rush you've made. Great inroads on this, my friend, and we're grateful for it.
