Recent changes, red and green numbers

Looking at Recent changes, I see every change has a number in parenthesis. Green numbers are always positive and red numbers are always negative. What do these signify please?

Red and green numbers indicate the number of characters that have changed from the character count at the end of the previous editing session. For example, say there's an article I edit that had exactly 1000 characters on the page. If I change the spelling of a few words to correct typos and the number of characters increase by 5 letters, the recent changes would display a green +5 in the recent change line for that article. The same would hold true if I deleted 5 characters, but the deletion would appear as a -5 in red instead.-- Kodia 12:39, 22 September 2008 (UTC)
