Hi all. I'm interested in helping update the hundreds of spells that were renamed/tiered during LU 52. As far as I can tell, I'll need to:

  • Go to a class's main page.
  • Rename all the spells in the 'Spells/CAs by Category' section, and make new pages for all of the new names.
  • Rename all of the spells in the 'Spells/CAs by Tier and Level' section, and make new pages for all of the new names.
  • Make sure all of the new pages use correct capitalization/spelling and use the new template.

I'd love to help with this, but I need a walkthrough since I'm not experienced beyond basic wiki editing. Could someone make a post demo-ing the process for a single spell, so I know how to get started here? Thanks. Foozlesprite 23:23, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

Don't do them in the order you've listed. For now, it's better to update the spells on the class category page only after you've moved and updated the spell (that way people can still get to the old ones until they've been updated). The basic methodology I follow is as follows:
  1. Edit the spell and add {{subst:SIx}} to the top, hit minor edit and save. This will load the new template from the preload.
  2. Edit the spell and start copying data from the old template (which will be at the bottom) to the new templates. This is what takes the most time. Use the comments to help you. You may have to add new data (ie crit mod, but thats almost always 1.30).
  3. Preview it. You'll see the old template down the bottom, ignore it and just look at the top one. Does it look right? Is there something missing or obviously wrong? If not, delete the SpellInformation (NOT SpellInformation2) template and the effects templates below it.
  4. Preview again. Nothing missing, right? If it all looks good...
  5. Save. Once it reloads, click Move at the top and enter the appropriate name (Blah VII).
  6. Once its renamed, click on the redirect that you just created and add {{AfD|Renamed Spell}} . This tells the admin to delete the old-named spell page.
  7. Move onto the next spell in the line. Often its easier to copy the entry you just made to the top instead of preloading with subst:SIx since so little data changes in between.
  8. If somethings not right or you can't figure it out, ask for help. It can also be helpful to look at an existing filled-in example. Category:Warden has some that I've done, look for spells that have II or whatever in the name.
The best suggestion I can give is to try one out following that and see how it goes. If you get stuck along the way ask here and I'll try to help out best I can =) -- lordebon 00:13, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Started on the dirge line Thuri's Doleful Thrust. Ran into an issue renaming the first one because there was a spell later in the line named the same thing. So I edited and moved the later spell, but I still won't be able to rename the first spell until the old page is deleted as requested...I have a feeling that cleanup from this update is gonna take a long time. Worked like a charm otherwise though, thanks a ton. Foozlesprite 02:20, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Aye, thats one issue, just tag the old redirect with the AfD and Kodia should clean it out within a day or so. Alternatively, when you get a bunch and she hasn't deleted them list them here with links and I'll move them off of the names you need to something she can delete later. And yeah, its going to take a while, there's a lot of spells to go through =) -- lordebon 03:39, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
I noticed a little error in your template, nom=y should be nom2=y...gonna have to spend a little time going back to fix those :) Foozlesprite 03:44, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Thats not an error ;). In the preload you should get two flags: gu52=y (indicated its a new spell so you don't get warning text) and nogm=y. gm is the new m2. nom would be if for some reason there was no master version. m2 doesnt exist and the template no longer accepts that flag, at least if you're using the correct one (SpellEffectsLine2 vs the old SpellEffectsLine). The "2" version comes with the preload, the old 1 version still has the nom2 param because its no longer supported / being phased out. -- lordebon 03:50, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

For some reason the new template still shows nom=y instead of nogm=y for me. I'm gonna go back over what I edited and make sure it's using SpellEffectsLine2 and nogm=y. Foozlesprite 03:56, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
If you're using the SIx preload, it should be including SpellEffectsLine2 and using nogm. I'll double check, but I did several lines with it and got the proper templates. Also, you should now see a warning in the old template, it'll let you know you're using the old one ;) -- lordebon 04:00, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
I found what was confusing me and there *is* an error, just not that one! In the description for the parameters, it says to add nom=y instead of nogm=y.
fixed. -- Vraeth 07:05, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Stat adjustment for spell effects Edit

Hi Lordebon, I have a question/suggestion. Most spells are affected by one of the player's stats. For example, most warrior combat arts have their exact damage values affected by strength. I have always wanted to add a footnote to the SpellEffects table indicating that the spell is adjusted based on the player's stat. For example, for a warrior combat art, it might say "The exact damage will vary based on the caster's Strength" (or something similar). I guess this could be accomplished by adding another optional field to the template to indicate which stat affects the spell. The stat is mostly consistent for each class (e.g. most scout combat arts are affected by agility, I think), but I think there are exceptions for each class, so the stat woul have to be specified for every individual spell. Do you think this is worthwhile? Since we are going to be editing every spell over the next few weeks, it might be a good time to add another field like this. Sassinak 06:41, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

That's something I've thought about myself. There's actually multiple ways of affecting a spell... for example, a nuke spell's damage is affected by intelligence, but the power is affected by the mastery stat. That's one reason I wish they'd add a way of examining a spell that would produce consistent results (ie with a standardized stat and skill). I'll add a stat flag to the spelleffectsbottom2 template, but even then its fighting an uphill battle (when doing the warden spells, I'm having to strip all my gear off and swap to a blank AA spec in order to get base/consistent stats). -- lordebon 15:59, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Added. Use stat=Intelligence (or whatever) in SpellEffectsBottom2. Please use the full stat name to make it read properly since it does ucfirst to it. -- lordebon 16:12, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Cool, great job. I don't think it's crucial to list "naked" values for the spell's damage, but it's more important to explain why the player might see a slightly different number. The new footnote accomplishes this. -- Sassinak 04:02, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

AF Deletions Edit

I'm heading in to do the mass deletions for you guys. Sorry about the delay. We've had a death in the family here and are waiting on more info. I'll get this done right away and if I have to head out of town for the funeral, I'll put a message on my talk page and let Uberfuzzy know so that he can make sure he helps you guys out asap.-- Kodia 18:56, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

You know, I started down this page and now I'm rethinking it. Why are we deleting the old redirects again? What happens if someone remembers or has been linking to the old page and it's suddenly gone?-- Kodia 19:27, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Sorry to hear about the family, that always comes first. As for the redirects, its up to you. I figured that nothing in-game should be linking to them anymore, and all the links on the site should be cleaned up (by having no redirect, it makes the spell link stick out as a redlink to be fixed). -- lordebon 20:08, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
Agreed, the spells should be upgraded across the board, including in the spell books which will clearly need rewriting. Good. Okay, proceeding then. We may get tinked by old lists outside the wiki linking to old info, but honestly those aren't as important in my mind. I'd question if we were deleting super-pages, like the entire crafting pages, but I think this will be okay. -- Kodia 20:22, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

The size of things Edit

Just to give you folks an idea of exactly how many spell pages need updating... this is from the category that all spells using the old SpellEffectsLine are put into:

The following 200 pages are in this category, out of 2,983 total.

So, keep up the good work and we'll get through them all, eventually =) -- lordebon 17:14, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

I'll just keep telling myself that most of those are single spells and HO starters and misc stuff that won't need to be revamped *cough*. Foozlesprite 03:27, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

Penance Disambiguation page Edit

Hi! I tried to update the Inquisitor Spell Penance to the new format, but as Penance has a Disambiguation page I would need a hint how I can change the Template so that I can link to Penance I. Is that currently even possible? Tanks -- Calain 15:48, 18 August 2009 (UTC)

use the alt1=Penance (Inquisitor) parameter -- Vraeth 15:57, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
What Vraeth said: add alt=1Penance (Inquisitor)| in there. It's not listed on this sort of 'walkthrough' but that parameter should be listed on the actual template page, along with a bunch of other more adavanced, less-common features. -- lordebon 17:08, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
Thanks! I'll try to update all Inquisitor Spells in the next week or so. :D -- Calain 22:12, 18 August 2009 (UTC)
