Ok I have fought this boss a few more times and he appears to place a mark on the ground that can kill you if you keep standing in it as well as spawning portals. As for the portals they can be ignored with high DPS as you can DPS down the boss without them even opening. If you feel your DPS is too low or the kill is taking too long burn the portal otherwise ignore it.
