I've started to go through the item icons and try to arrange them in a more coherent fashion. I'm going to work through the Plant Icons first and try to get those sorted out. I might do the book icons next. If anybody has a suggestion or ideas please let me know. I would like to make these icons as easy to find as possible so any feedback would be helpful.

At the moment I'm wondering if I should rename the rose icons and group them with the other flower icons or just leave the roses icons as a separate name. Let me know what you think :) Jado818 ( talk ) 15:36, February 15, 2014 (UTC)

Potion Icons Edit

I just noticed that Category:Potion Icons isn't listed anywhere (or maybe I missed it). Can someone add it into one of these categories? Thank you!
Paceyourself (sig) ( Talk ) 11:39, March 15, 2014 (UTC)

Sure thing, It's going to be a slow process for me to rearrange all of these icons categories and images but I made a To-Do list of sorts on the root icon category. I had marked the potion icons for adjusting but haven't got around to doing anything with that category just yet. I've been sorting through furniture icons lately. If you see anything on the Category:Icons list that you want to work on go for it (or if you want to add something to the to do list). It wouldn't bother me to have another person (or many) working on the icons collaboratively :) Jado818 ( talk ) 13:38, March 15, 2014 (UTC)
Hi Jado,
Thanks for adding the potions. They'll be easier to find now! I was going to add them but I knew you'd been collaborating with Lordebon on the icons. I have looked at the various conversations that have taken place over the years and it seems like the icons have gone through many, many iterations over time.
I think once Lordebon gets the SOE API linked up, all those frustrations will go away. In the meantime I'll add anything that needs to be added to the existing setup but probably not do anything major in anticipation of his changes. He hasn't given an ETA but knowing that it's coming makes tinkering on the existing setup bearable.
Thanks again for your help and many, many thanks for the work you do here on the Wiki! I'm honored to be your fellow collaborator! Paceyourself (sig) ( Talk ) 11:46, March 16, 2014 (UTC)

Example Edit

Hi Jado,

I can't wait until Lordebon works his magic. Here's a perfect example of how confusing the icons are right now and I don't see how we can easily overcome it because it's based on human perception and attention to detail.

I was looking for an icon just now and the one I needed was "like" this Shoulders Icon 0009 (Legendary) at 0009 (but in the Treasured variety) but not quite exactly so I posted this Shoulders Icon 0109 (Treasured) at 0109 because nothing else quite matched it. They're so similar it gets confusing.

As I was going through looking for what I needed (and that takes some time) I found that the Fabled version of this Shoulders Icon 0098 (Fabled) at 0098 was exactly the same as the Treasured version Shoulders Icon 0108 (Treasured) at 0108.

What I see now is that we could conceivably find that someone inadvertently posts a Treasured at 0098 or vice versa and the icon library starts getting wonky. I know I'm very careful about trying to find a particular icon but I know I'm probably guilty of mis-posting.

The confusing thing is that I KNOW I've seen a particular icon many times before. I just can't remember if it was in-game or in the icon library! The potion icon I was looking for Icon potion red 03 (Common) was one I've seen a million times before (How many times have we all seen this one?) and I found it inconceivable that it wasn't somewhere in the library. I don't know how much time I burned looking for it... Did I mention that I can't wait for Lordebon to work his magic?

As it is now, it's almost like playing *Where's Waldo* or *Concentration*. Fun games, but they can be frustrating when played here! Paceyourself (sig) ( Talk ) 14:08, March 16, 2014 (UTC)

I know the feeling :) I hope Lordebon can get the API to auto-link the icons but I don't mind working on making the current sorting easier to use, even if it will be replaced at some point in the future. Although I'm going to be busy for the next couple of weeks so I won't be doing much editing during this time but I haven't forgotten about working on the icons :) Jado818 ( talk ) 14:15, March 16, 2014 (UTC)
Sorry for the long wait on it. The last two weeks have been crazy busy for me (not helped by my laptop going down & needing repair this week) and left me little time for the wiki. However, I do consider getting at least the icon code a priority and hope to get it done soon, even this week if possible. Just hold on folks, help will be here soon (tm)! -- lordebon ( talk ) 23:16, March 16, 2014 (UTC)
Hi Lordebon,
No rush. I think we're just reiterating the same frustrations as those before us. It seems like the icons have caused a stir many, many times over the years and sure, we'd like an automated way to make sure we get the *right* one. But we also realize that you have a life and respect that. Any job worth doing is worth doing right. Take your time and don't feel rushed just because of this conversation.
We've been doing it this way up until now, a bit longer won't matter! Paceyourself (sig) ( Talk ) 09:02, March 17, 2014 (UTC)

Progress on census icons Edit

Hey folks, just wanted to give you a heads-up: I spent an hour or two today working on getting all the backgrounds and such to support the soe/census-supplied icon images. It may take a little while for the CSS changes to filter down (don't ask me why, always takes a while), but once it does you'll see the proper backgrounds on Template:Lordebon Dev . With that all done, it's just a matter of finishing the integration into the equip and item information templates and then you'll be able to pull the finished icon right from SOE with the icon number (and with the appropriate background decided by the items rarity).

The SOE icon number is something you'll have to look up per-item; I plan to make a simple query tool (put in item name, get icon number out) next to make it easy to find the correct item number. Soon the tyranny of the uploaded icon will be a thing of the past! ;) -- lordebon ( talk ) 21:41, March 21, 2014 (UTC)

This is great news :)
I'd suggest archiving or maintaining the old icons or a list of icons / pages that linked to the icons somewhere. It's always a good idea to have a back up system in case something gets broken. API's (not just this SoE one) have been known to run into problems before and if something gets broken down the road I'm not sure how much priority or effort SoE would assign to fixing the API.
I Look forward to trying out the new system. Jado818 ( talk ) 00:36, March 22, 2014 (UTC)
I saw that you had protected an icon background and was hopeful that this news was forthcoming! Thank you! I'm totally oblivious to how it will work so I'm looking forward to the tutorial. Without rehashing, I'm in 100% agreement with all that Jado says. Thanks again for all the work you do and for taking the time to make things better! Census-based icons are now available for both the EquipInformation and the ItemInformation template. The key thing you will need is the SOE icon number; getting this number isn't simple for the uninitiated. If you're adventurous, you can attempt to get the icon number one of two ways by modifying the following URL and then pasting it into a new tab:

  • If you have the item's ID (the first number in the itemlink only):
    • replace the number with the id
  • If you only have the item's name, search
    • http://census.soe.com/s:eq2i/json/get/eq2/item/?displayname_lower=^item+name+in+lowercase&c:limit=20&c:show=iconid,tier,id
    • replace the item+name+in+lowercase with the search name.
    • you can leave off parts at the end (it matches the front of the string)
    • must use + in lieu of spaces in the item name
    • will display the name, id, and iconid for up to 20 matches.

The next step is to make a simple app (probably going to try google's free app engine for this) that is more user-friendly; it'll take the item name or id and spit out the iconid, or if there are multiple matches, a list of possible iconids with helper information (name, rarity).

Cheers! -- lordebon ( talk ) 21:12, March 25, 2014 (UTC)

Hi Lordebon! I have the iconid... What do I do with it? I tried placing it in the "icon" field (alone and prepended with iconid) in the EquipInformation template and also populated the written rarity field... No love! Anxiously awaiting your reply! Paceyourself (sig) ( Talk ) 16:31, March 26, 2014 (UTC)
Sorry, I forgot to mention the param name. Put the iconid in the iconnum field (which you'll have to add, should be something like iconnum = 1234|). I haven't added that parameter yet to the preloads since there's no easy way for the average user to get the icon id, but it is documented on the Equip and Item templates. Basically the fields coexist; if the iconnum is supplied it uses that and doesn't even check the icon field, but when theres no iconnum it happily uses the local icon filenames as before, that way we keep the existing functionality. -- lordebon ( talk ) 17:49, March 26, 2014 (UTC)
If nobody has told you yet... you're AWESOME!!! Freeport Shroud of the Overlord's Tenacity is my test! OMG that is EASY and so much FASTER and, and... well, you know BETTER! Thank you so much wise one! Paceyourself (sig) ( Talk ) 18:31, March 26, 2014 (UTC)
Works for me also :)
As a note for useability. You don't need to use the (plus) + sign between words. You can just type the name of the item all lower case with regular spaces and the search will return the item. Here was my test item's id. http://census.soe.com/s:eq2i/json/get/eq2/item/?displayname_lower=^cloak%20of%20the%20jeweler&c:limit=20&c:show=iconid,tier,id
Thanks again lordebon. Jado818 ( talk ) 14:14, March 27, 2014 (UTC)

Multiple icons Edit

Hi Lordebon,

Is there anything we can do with item templates that require multiple icons?

Tunic of Coagulated Primality

Thank you for your consideration! Paceyourself (sig) ( Talk ) 17:48, March 27, 2014 (UTC)

Doable, but might be messy getting the backgrounds right. Added to the to-do list. -- lordebon ( talk ) 13:55, April 8, 2014 (UTC)

Handcrafted Items Background. Edit

The background color for handcrafted items isn't working through the new icon system just yet.

Example: Termite tested briarwood . Jado818 ( talk ) 13:41, April 8, 2014 (UTC)

Fixed. -- lordebon ( talk ) 13:53, April 8, 2014 (UTC)
